Liturgical Music We have used the above title in preference to ‘Folk Group’, the name we have inherited! ‘Folk Group’ can conjure up an image of strident guitars, inane lyrics, lack of sensitivity to the beauty of the liturgy, ignorance of solemnity, weak theology, ignoring the need to create to infuse awe and mystery, and in general doing little to foster truly mature spiritual inspiration. Strangely enough, although the above is caricature, awareness of the pitfalls described can allow us to create a road map for the journey to where our music is taking us. We are attempting to blend guitar with clarinet/flute and clear vocal harmonies essentially to create the mood of the service and to encourage the congregation to sing with us. We are attempting to bring a freshness of approach to our music rather than ignore the wealth of catholic tradition. Our sources include Taizé and the psalms and songs of the St. Louis Jesuits. We are also introducing singing some of the parts of the Mass. Hopefully we’re finding the right recipe but ultimately it will be the clergy and congregation who will decide if the banquet is ready. |
