Lately Dead.
I ask you to remember in your prayers those from the parish of St. David’s who have died in the past ten days, especially,

Kathleen Flynn, who was buried from St. David’s on Wednesday of last week. Kathleen and of course her husband Charlie and her family are well known to so many in our parish.

Helen Craig, a parishioner originally from Our Lady of Loretto, Clydebank who moved through here eighteen months ago and who I took Holy Communion to twice monthly while she lived with her son and family.

Sister Mary Columkille, Canon Liam Healey’s sister, who died in Ireland.

We commend them to the mercy of the God who made them and pray for the consolation of their Lord and Saviour for their families at this sad time.
'Eternal rest Grant unto them O Lord. Amen.'

Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
This Sacrament is celebrated at the following times,

St. Luke & St. Anne’s, Mayfield :-
Wednesday and Saturday mornings after Mass.
St. David’s, Dalkeith :-
Saturday, 5.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. prior to the Vigil Mass.

Any suitable time at either parish on request.

Praying for the Sick and Housebound.
In a photograph of the late Cardinal Joseph Bernadin, Archbishop of Chicago, the caption below the photo ran as follows - ‘ Cardinal Bernadin extends his hands and calls his people to prayer.’

I often think of that photo and caption as we enter the central part of our Liturgy the Eucharistic Prayer.

The celebrant regardless of his rank, extends his hands and calls his people to enter into prayer. This prayer is then for all: those present, those who through illness cannot be present, and those absent for other reasons.
As we reach that part of the Mass this weekend and we are called to prayer, we pray especially for those who cannot be with us because of illness.

We as ever commend them to Christ the Divine Healer.

Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time.
With our focus on the forthcoming visit of our Holy Father Benedict XVI, we hope and pray his visit to our shores will again re invigorate our Faith and the practice of our Faith.

Regardless of where we choose to see him, Bellahouston or Princes St., what we have to remember is that he comes to us the Vicar of Christ. The Holy Father is for us as Catholics the representative of Christ on Earth.

Those of us who were there back in 1982, know how historical an event it was. This up coming visit is of equal historical importance and it is one we should cherish and hopefully value.
Realistically, for many of our parishes, the best place to go and see him is on Princes St. as he travels through the city.

I would hope our prayer for him at the age of 82 years is
‘God Bless our Pope the Great the Good.’

Parish News and Events.

Missionary Appeal - Grateful thanks to all who contributed so Sister Monica’s Appeal last Sunday. I await a final total from Sister who took all monies away with her.
Once I have the total it will be made to known and published.
On her behalf again my sincere thanks to all.

More Grateful Thanks.
Last weekend was a particularly busy one as we had not only the Appeal, but also as we all know our Annual Parish Fun Day.

I thank all who were part of the all important organising side of this day, the committee, the faithful men and women who can always be relied on to turn up and pitch in to fantastic effect!
I thank also our younger men and women who gave of their time and talents on Saturday afternoon and Sunday also.

As ever we pulled through together despite the far from initial pleasant weather!
In particular I thanks the chefs who kept us fed, the band who entertained us and all who cleared up so quickly.

The total to date is just over £1,500, which is a fantastic amount of money raised is such a short period of time. This will be shared between the two local charities,

The Mark Wright Foundation, and Crossroads.

A date will be chosen over the next few weeks to have the presentation in the parish hall after the 11.00 a.m. Mass. Details to follow.
Again my sincere thanks to all who made the day go so well
...................on to next year!!

Baptismal Preparation Classes.
I indicated just prior to the summer that I intend to change the way I prepare parents for the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism. The new programme will begin in Advent and between then and now I will be working with a small group of parishioners from both parishes to put this programme in place.

If you are interested in helping please speak to me. Thanks.

Brian writes on the Fun Day,
A huge thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make last Sunday’s Fun Day such a success despite the chilly cool weather.

Total amount raised was £1530.00 which means a half of that, i.e. £765.00, going to each of the two charities - Mark Wright Project and Crossroads Respite for Carers. It is hoped to present cheques to representatives of these charities next Sunday in the Hall after 11.00 a.m. Mass.

There is one raffle prize from the Parish Fun Day unclaimed, the name on the ticket is Joseph Jack. The prize will be available for collection at the back of the church from Saturday night.

200 Club Proposals will be out for consultation on 4/5 September - please return them completed within a week to the box at the back of church.

Analysis of the returns will then take place and determine the future of the 200 Club.

200 Club.
Just 2 weeks left to the Grand Prize Draw.

Make sure you are fully paid up. Please!

The Scripture Reading Group is starting up again after a break for the holidays, and will be meeting on Tuesdays at 7.30 p.m. in the parish room.

Mary’s Meals - I am sure you will have heard that Mary's Meals is one of the 2 official charities (with Marie Curie Cancer Care), who have been invited to hold a street collection in Princes Street in Edinburgh on 16th September at the St Ninian's Day Parade.  The Pope is due to drive along Princes Street after leaving Holyrood Palace following his reception with the Queen.  Mary's Meals has been invited to provide 100-150 volunteer collectors.

All I know so far is that volunteers will be meeting at 9.00 a.m. in Edinburgh but I don’t have location details yet. You would need to be there until about 2.00 p.m.. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.

Please help if you can, and get a friend to come along too.  If you can help, please contact Rachael Park by e-mail on rachael.park@marysmeals.org or call her on 0141 336 7094.  She will let you know when she has further details.

Piety Stall.
Mass Cards, Rosaries, Prayer Books etc. are on sale after the Sunday Mass.
Orders can be taken if items not on display.

Rosaries required for the Royal Infirmary.
Please leave any rosaries you have spare in the basket at the back of church.

Admission to local Hospitals & Nursing Homes.
Data protection prevents us from knowing who is admitted, it is important that if you or a member of your family is to be admitted and require Communion and/or the Sacrament of the Sick to please let me know as soon as possible.

As far as I am able I try to visit my own parishioners who are in hospital and anoint those who request it. Thanks.
